Workshop on conservation of wild ungulates and their predators

Work Package 5 - Technical and governance preparatory work

On 20 May 2024, a technical workshop was held on the theme ‘The importance of ungulates as prey for the Iberian wolf and lynx: key lessons for conservation and management’. The event, held online, aimed to promote the exchange of knowledge and discuss the management of ungulates in different ecological contexts.

During the workshop, participants heard from three experts who addressed crucial issues for the conservation of Iberian fauna. The discussions explored the relationship between ungulates and the lynx's diet, highlighting the importance of these prey species in the species' diet. In addition, the impacts of ungulates on vegetation were discussed, including their importance in fire prevention and the rewilding process. Another important point addressed was the social dimension and communities' perceptions of these species, highlighting how interaction between humans and wildlife can influence conservation. The event also featured a question and answer session, allowing interaction with the experts. Finally, the invited speakers were able to continue discussing the main conclusions of the day in a facilitated closed conversation.

Organised in collaboration with the LIFE WILD WOLF project, which aims to implement concrete actions to protect wolves in anthropogenic environments in Europe, the event served as a useful forum for exchanging experiences and sharing strategies aimed at preserving wildlife and its habitats, promoting constructive dialogue between experts and the general public.
