Day of conservation of ungulates and predators

Work Package 5 - Technical and governance preparatory work

On May 20, 2024, a technical day was held with the theme “The importance of ungulates as prey of the Iberian wolf and lynx: key learnings for conservation and management”. The event, held online, aimed to promote the exchange of knowledge and discuss the management of ungulates in different ecological contexts.

During the day, the participants were able to listen to three experts who addressed crucial topics for the conservation of the Iberian fauna. The lectures explored the relationship between ungulates and lynx diet, highlighting the relevance of these prey in the species' diet. In addition, the impacts of ungulates on vegetation were discussed, including their importance in fire prevention and the rewilding process. Another important point addressed was the social dimension and the perceptions of communities in relation to these species, showing how the interaction between humans and wildlife can influence conservation.

The event also had a question and answer session, allowing interaction with the experts. Finally, the invited experts were able to continue the discussion of the main conclusions of the day in a closed facilitated conversation.

Held in collaboration with the LIFE WILD WOLF project, which aims to implement concrete actions to keep wolves in anthropogenic environments in Europe, the event stood out as a useful space for the exchange of experiences and the sharing of strategies aimed at the preservation of fauna and its habitats, promoting a constructive dialogue between specialists and society.
